5 Ways to Support Children in Emergency Learning Environments

Education is more than a classroom; it’s hope, stability, and a path toward a brighter future. Yet, for millions of children affected by conflict, displacement, or natural disasters, access to consistent education is disrupted.
In Nigeria, internally displaced children often face overcrowded shelters, limited infrastructure, a shortage of trained teachers, and minimal access to learning materials. These challenges not only hinder academic growth but also affect emotional well-being and long-term opportunities.

At Betharbel Foundation, we are committed to bridging these gaps and ensuring that displaced and marginalized children continue to learn, thrive, and reclaim their futures. Based on our experience, here are five ways to support children in emergency learning environments.

1. Provide Consistent Access to Learning Materials
A lack of textbooks, stationery, and curriculum-aligned resources is one of the biggest barriers for children in crisis. Providing preloaded digital devices, workbooks, and learning kits ensures children can continue lessons despite disruptions.
At Betharbel Foundation, we equip our Karatu Hub with laptops and tablets loaded with offline curriculum content, allowing children to learn without relying on internet connectivity. In 2025 alone, these resources have supported over 400 learners, ensuring uninterrupted education in displacement camps.
How you can help: Donate educational materials, sponsor digital devices, or fund learning kits for schools in emergency settings.

2. Support Nutrition and Well-Being
A hungry child cannot focus on lessons. Nutritional support is critical for learning, especially in emergency contexts where families struggle to meet basic needs.
In 2025, Betharbel Foundation served over 104,400 meals to children in our free elementary school, providing the energy and focus they need to engage in learning activities. Proper nutrition also strengthens immunity and overall health, reducing absenteeism.
How you can help: Sponsor school meals, support community kitchens, or fund programs that provide safe, nutritious food to children in crisis.

3. Empower Teachers and Caregivers
Teachers in emergency settings face immense challenges: trauma among learners, resource constraints, and disrupted curricula. Supporting teachers with training, fair salaries, and digital tools ensures quality instruction continues even under difficult circumstances.
Betharbel Foundation’s Adopt a Teacher program allows educators to receive consistent pay and professional development, enabling them to provide stable, compassionate guidance to children. Engaging caregivers through workshops also helps them support learning at home.
How you can help: Sponsor teacher salaries, fund professional development, or offer mentorship programs for educators in emergency contexts.

4. Create Safe and Inclusive Learning Spaces
Displaced children often lack safe places to learn. Transforming shelters, community centers, or temporary structures into child-friendly learning hubs fosters engagement, routine, and emotional security.
Our hubs combine physical classrooms, safe outdoor spaces, and community gathering areas, where children can learn, play, and rebuild confidence. Structured learning environments also help children regain a sense of normalcy and belonging.
How you can help: Fund classroom furniture, repair and maintain learning spaces, or provide equipment to create child-friendly environments.

5. Promote Digital and Blended Learning
Technology can bridge gaps when traditional education is disrupted. Even offline-first digital learning allows children to access curriculum-aligned content, interactive lessons, and assessments without internet access.
Betharbel Foundation’s Karatu Learning Hub equips teachers with tablets and laptops, enabling blended learning that combines in-person instruction with interactive digital lessons. This approach improves literacy, numeracy, and early digital skills, preparing learners for a future where technology is integral.
How you can help: Sponsor offline digital devices, fund content creation, or support teacher training in digital pedagogy.

Why Your Support Matters
Emergency learning environments are challenging, but with targeted support, children can thrive despite adversity. Every meal served, every learning kit delivered, every teacher empowered, and every hub created translates into hope, opportunity, and a future for a child who has already endured loss and disruption.
At Betharbel Foundation, we’ve seen the difference these interventions make: 48 students have transitioned to secondary school, hundreds of children continue their education, and thousands of meals have fueled their learning. By supporting children in emergency learning environments, you are not just funding education; you are investing in resilience, empowerment, and a brighter tomorrow.
Join us in making education accessible to every child, no matter the circumstance.
