Bridging the Education Gap for Displaced Children in Nigeria

Bridging the Gap: How Displaced Children Can Access Quality Education in Nigeria

Education is a right, not a privilege, but for millions of displaced children in Nigeria, it remains a distant dream. Conflict, displacement, and socio-economic challenges have forced families from their homes, leaving children without schools, materials, or hope for a consistent education. According to recent estimates, over 3 million children in Nigeria are internally displaced, many of whom face permanent learning gaps.
At Betharbel Foundation, we believe that every child deserves the chance to learn, grow, and thrive. Our work bridges the gap by providing quality, inclusive education to children who are often overlooked.
The Challenges Displaced Children Face
Displaced children encounter unique barriers:
Lack of Infrastructure: Many camps and informal settlements lack classrooms and learning materials, leaving children to learn on the floor or in makeshift shelters.
Limited Trained Teachers: A shortage of teachers trained to handle trauma-informed instruction affects the quality of education.
Interrupted Learning: Displacement disrupts continuity, leaving children behind their peers.
Economic Strain: Families struggling for basic needs cannot always prioritize school fees, uniforms, or materials.
Trauma: Exposure to violence and displacement affects emotional well-being, making learning even more challenging.
How Betharbel Foundation Bridges the Gap
We address these challenges through innovative, community-focused solutions:

  1. Free, Quality Education
Our Free Elementary School for IDPs currently serves 400 children, offering curriculum-aligned learning, structured classrooms, and over 104,400 school meals in 2025 alone, ensuring children are nourished and ready to learn.
  2. Teacher Support & Adoption
Through programs like Adopt a Teacher, we support educators with fair pay and training, empowering them to deliver high-quality, trauma-informed instruction.
  3. Digital & Blended Learning
Initiatives like Karatu Learning Hub bring offline-first digital learning to children without internet access. Laptops and tablets preloaded with interactive, curriculum-aligned content allow teachers to facilitate blended learning, ensuring no child is left behind.
  4. Safe & Inclusive Spaces
Our learning hubs provide stability and routine, helping children rebuild confidence, develop life skills, and re-engage with learning despite displacement.
  5. Transition & Growth Opportunities
Since inception, 48 students have successfully transitioned to secondary school, while our programs continue to prepare learners for long-term success.
  6. Flagship Events & Advocacy
Betharbel Foundation hosted the inaugural Reclaim Her Global Summit, bringing together women and girls to reclaim voice, power, and leadership. This event highlighted our holistic approach to education, empowerment, and community transformation.
