Some Dreams Are Being Written on the Floor In one of our classrooms, a bright little girl carefully opens her notebook… and places it on her knees. There is no desk. She adjusts her posture, leans forward, and begins to write anyway. This is what determination looks like when resources are scarce. At Betharbel Foundation’s Free Elementary School for Internally Displaced Children, over 400 pupils show up every day with an unshakeable hunger for learning. Many have lost homes, stability, and safety. What they have not lost is hope. What they should not lose is dignity. Yet today, too many of our children learn without proper school furniture. Some sit on overcrowded benches. Some share desks meant for one child. Some write on the floor. And still — they learn. Education is more than lessons and textbooks. It is environment. It is posture. It is the quiet confidence a child gains when their learning space tells them, “You matter.” A simple desk and chair can change how a child engages with school, how long they can focus, and how much they believe in themselves. Right now, our classrooms are stretched beyond capacity. The furniture we have has served faithfully for years, but it is no longer enough. As enrollment grows and learning continues, the gap becomes more visible — and more urgent. This is why we are reaching out. We are raising support to provide strong, child-friendly desks and chairs for our pupils. Furniture that can withstand daily use. Furniture that supports healthy posture. Furniture that restores dignity to learning. This is not about comfort alone. It is about equity. A child who has already been displaced should not also be disadvantaged in the classroom. When children sit well, they write better. When they are comfortable, they concentrate longer. When their learning environment is stable, their confidence grows.
